I honestly think this is my favorite reading out of all of them not because photo is my major but because this article really caught my attention with the culture, the argument of the artists art work and the photographs. I loved both Curtis's and Throssel's work but my favorite has to be Edward Curtis just because I love his portraits. Curtis shows more of how the Native Americans looked and dressed or their emotions and Throssel shows their whole culture, religion, ceremonies, and where they lived. I actually disagree with Deloria's comment she said that Curtis's art work suggests a movie still rather than a historical event and that he froze his subjects in the distant past.
That may be right but I do think it shows culture and how they looked back then or how they were feeling. He was like the reading says an emotional formalist, not a documentarian which I find okay. There are many tribes who supported him just because they see it as a record for the next generations ahead. Throssel on the other hand is Native American and an adopted member of the crow which let him attend and photograph/record ceremonies or possibly historical events. Throssel documented daily conditions (health related) and tribal events. They used there way of seeing things to help us even though it might not be accurate.

Reading 1 The Rhinoceros from Durer to Stubbs. 1515-1799
I found this reading very interesting. It is weird how back then like where this reading takes place, in the 1500's they used to see animals that are common today for the first time. They would draw them or describe them and it was hard to imagine that specific animal. It's the same today but, we describe them with actual pictures and sounds. The rhinoceros is a single-horned Indian animal and named Ganda after the Portuguese.
Something else I found interesting was when the Rhino would launch at the elephant. It would bow his head with his horn on top, so when he would reach the elephant he'd bring his head up and that would cut the elephant making it bleed. I find animals amazingly interesting because I feel they are so much like us, they are so smart in ways we don't even think about. This is one reason why I'm excited for this topic. Abrecht Durer's woodcut is very detailed, I love the perspective of the armor like body structure on the rhino.

In-Depth cardboard sculpture
These 2 on top are mini samples on what I thought should look like when I expand it.
This in-depth was very hard (complex). I started out with my silhouettes and continued by playing with cardboard, since I have never used cardboard. The representation of the bottom part is to show how humans grow. We start as babies which is the flower bulb at the bottom and in our own little protected home (box/cube) and then we start peeling out as we get older. The top represents when we are adults, that we know who we are or who we want to be. I did incorporate some of my shapes. I am disappointed about it falling apart on my way to class but I did learn a lot from this project.
3 Motives
Small work 3
Not to make any excuses but I actually did not know we had to have our small works a minimum of 10 in but I understand thats my fault. These are my 3 motives and my sketching and plans.

FIU Wolfsonian Museum Visit
FIU Wolfsonian Museum
This Outside Visit was inspiring and amazing. I loved everything in it. There was so many designs, patterns, ornaments and antiques. It was amazing how Tony Garner did the city plan, he had such a vivid idea. It was so specific and detailed. It is so inspiring how he produced about several hundred plans. This museum was very historical and touching to me.
I connected with some of the art work because my uncle is a retired Air Force veteran and he knows everything of history especially this era. A few of my favorite art pieces are the ones in the pictures below. I love the craftsmanship and the mediums. It was all so creative and detailed. I felt this museum was way better than the other one we went to, but thats my opinion.

Wall Paper
This project was very frustrating for me even though I did enjoy it because I always like to try new things. I ended up liking the final product, but I could have done certain things to make it better.

META Assignment: prompt #1
I lack of topical research, I try and get inspired by other artists (AR) and then I start Experimentation. I set certain goals then I do Focus and Resolution and reflect on my work. After all that I present and document my work.

Deep Surface: Ornament and Pattern
Just like they say Art is everywhere so is pattern and ornament. Pattern has been made since before the 1st century which is pretty cool. It has culture, history, language and meaning, it could be decorative or formal. It is on furniture, buildings, fabric, walls, metals, pretty much everywhere its amazing. It could be made up of shapes, colors, random symbols, letters and many mediums. From my interpretation like the reading says Pattern and Ornament helps us cope with complexity and its built in our brain organization/process.
In the exhibition thats mentioned in the reading shows 6 themes. The 6 themes are Amplification, The-Everyday, Kit-of-Parts, Elaboration, Inheritances and Fantasy. Amplification is to show the meaning or express an explanation. The-Everyday is the aspects of our daily lives. Kit-of-Parts are playful, you can take them apart and/or put them back together. Elaboration is to extend either the design or the meaning of it. Inheritances is from past historical or cultural inspired designs, traditions.
Fantasy is whatever you want, free play of our creativity or imagination. I enjoyed reading this article because it has inspired me very much with my small works.

"Ornament" and the Sources of Design in the Decorative Arts
"Ornament" and the Sources of Design in the Decorative Arts
by William M. Ivins, Jr
I found this article quite interesting. High schools have used a consistency or ornament and form. I learned that design and craftsmanship are different. design is based on craftsmanship. Pattern for lace from pagani, opera nova composta, venice 1546 is a beautiful well designed craft.
I love the design, it has a nice twist design. I also noticed in this article that music has to do with patterns. Many musicians had decorative art surrounding them. The decorative art had craftsmanship put into it, It had many patterns. These prints or crafty pieces are called ornaments, which I thought was pretty cool.

In-Depth Folk Art
In-Depth Project
Folk Art/ Outsider Art
This was the object I based it on. My Aunt from Cuba pass it on and my great uncle made it out of tree wood. It inspired me to do my research on Cuban culture.
In the bottom section of my piece, it represents the camp cubans used to live in how most of their materials was tree wood and livestock. Also decided to incorporate the famous beer, the cigar and the wine cup from the trinket that was past down through my family. The top section shows some quotes that connect to the taste of Cuba, to the freedom that they don't have, and how vivid and happy Cuba used to be. The colorful paint splattered is representing how beautiful Cuba is and how the women in Cuba used to dress. The Pop-up sticker represents the beautiful palm trees and beaches Cuba has, its paradise like. The Bongos represent the music, the coffee is a big part of cuban culture and the flag showing as its own country. I really enjoyed Critique today, it was a great experience and I also enjoyed the project as a whole because I experimented with a few mediums I have never thought of before.

Small Works Folk Art 2
I really enjoyed this small work because it made us think outside of the box. I think my artwork came out pretty cool even though at first I was unsure what to do. I was also challenged with these but I figured it out and I'm happy with them.
Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami
Susan Te Kahurangi King
Ida Applebroog
I thought both artists were really interesting and great. I loved Susan's collection. Her main focus was Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny and I noticed that her main mediums were crayons, pastel and graphite. I think I had more of a connection with Susan because of her character focus and the shapes and forms she uses. Something I found interesting was how she took those characters and yet made it her own in her own unique way. Her work can be colorful and dark as well.
I loved Ida's work too. She was very creative even though some of her work confused me. I didn't really understand most of her work, but I thought she was very inspiring with the booklets. I loved how she used the watercolor and ink as a combination. I thought all of her work was amazing, but the ones with the watercolor were my favorite, they were pretty cool. The pictures that I chose for this post were my favorite of each artist.
